Title: 2016 Zero SR ZF13 Salvage
Post by: talon on October 27, 2017, 11:00:57 AM
Hello all!

I just won a damaged 2016 SR at auction with intent to fix it up or use the parts for a future conversion. Before I do so, I wanted to gauge interest in the bike as-is. Also, unfortunately the bike is a great deal away from me (across the entire US in fact) so selling it may be my *smartest* option... but I never said that I always make smart decisions.

It's going to cost me a ton to transport it from where it currently resides in the SF bay area in California to where I am in the East Coast (by D.C.) so I did want to seriously consider offers before I really inspect the damages and look at transporting it. I will update this listing in a few days with details and can answer any questions you may have.

I am likely to lose money on this deal, as there is huge risk repairing any EV and this is also my first foray into doing anything like this ever. I think I've done my homework enough that I at least got a fair if not slightly steep deal.. my reasoning is I do not know for a fact that the battery hasn't been left discharged too long to cause irreparable damage and that there isn't frame damage by the head/neck of the frame (the bike looks like it was an in-motion front end collision followed by a slide or flip). I know it does not move under it's own power and has exposed low voltage wiring. The display and backlight recently powered up under the bike's own power. I don't think you are going to find a more honest or reasonable seller, or a better deal to get into EV's depending on how fixable this thing is. On a side note, has anyone heard a price for either fixing head/neck damage on aluminum frames OR battery pack replacement quotes from Zero (out of warranty)? Video coming soon upon inspection. If you are in CA you have until Nov. 2nd to see it or send an offer (unless you want to ship it back haha).

More details are available at this craigslist link, as well as a ballpark price:

Hmm... it sounds like you either got a deal on a slightly damaged SR or got swindled with a boat anchor. Either way, I don't think that a salvage 2016 SR is worth anywhere near $7K as it still needs to be repaired and brought back up to roadgoing condition. Not when you can get a new leftover 2017 SR for $12K and a demo 2016 SR for $10-11K or less. If I were going to bid on it at auction, the most I would have to paid (sight unseen) would be *maybe* $3-4K and even then I would probably still pass. It could be $3-5K just to repair the physical stuff and maybe more if the monolith was compromised in some way. You might be able to make your money back by parting it out as some things might be able to still be used but that is quite a bit of effort for potentially little gain. You time would most likely be better spent on other more financially lucrative endeavors. I wish you luck with it in any case though.

Maybe someone in the SF Bay area can have a look at it for you? Hayward isn't that far from me or others on the board.

It's not clear whether the seller is the owner or even hands-on knowledgeable about the bikes.

It seems like every once in a while someone's looking for an intact drivetrain to do a jetski conversion or a boat conversion or something. Not sure how you'd find that market though. I've sent the CL link to a friend of mine who loves to chat about my bike with me and is always working on a half-dozen projects.

BTW, if it powers up, that's a very good sign. Clearly the forks are bent, and maybe the frame. But if it's powering up, that and the picture seem to show that the guts are pretty undamaged -- the battery is at least providing some juice, and doesn't seem to be damaged in the picture. Obviously the MBB and BMS are at least somewhat functional as well, as is the 12VDC converter. I'd be willing to bet that the drivetrain is pretty much intact.

I have a strong interest in a bike like that at $3-4k, but $7k is way too steep as mentioned.  Especially considering you do not know if anything on the bike functions.  I wouldn’t risk $7k for that.

Of course if things are undamaged and functional underneath then there’s some value there.

Yes, I just listed the 7k figure to start somewhere for negotiations (I realize that's steep, but if you were considering selling wouldn't it be wonderful to get an offer near that--need to at least start high). I'm actually very interested in repairing the bike myself as I'm a little mechanically inclined and have access to some decent fabrication equipment. I'm currently an EE student with a lot of experience in golf cart repair--take that as you will. I really did my homework scouring all known information on the SR before making the purchase and currently figure I paid a little under what it's worth on average in this condition, but was kind of using these postings to back that intuition up to know that I didn't buy a "boat anchor"  ;D.

I own this bike, SALVAGE title in hand. That's a good point you brought up with the 2017's coming down in price with the new model release. My only concern with demo units is I thought I may have read that the warranties were restricted for those particular models in some way (reading the fine print on Zeros site).. for instance the warranties began on "Demonstrator" models from the moment the dealer took delivery. Also, I have no hands-on knowledge specifically with Zeros. I will update this post when I fly out to take a look at it soon (BTW plane tickets are at a seasonal low--$40 from DC to SF bay area).

I plan on specifically checking the BMS, HV contactor(s), accessory wiring, onboard charging system, motor/controller (if possible), MBB to the best of my abilities, steering/suspension for scope of damage.. well basically everything I can in a timely manner. I might be looking a little silly in the plane with my carry-on Rigol and Fluke set up.

I REALLY want a Zero. Specifically one with the tesla-like acceleration that 106lb-ft motor provides. However, as a student I could not justify a loan (or even 12 grand) on a less-than-practical commuter with how much rain and snow my area gets. I also didn't want to then watch that bike depreciate my much harder earned pre-degree cash especially when I'm a beginner rider. I enjoy the troubleshooting, modding, and nitty gritty details of a repair, and the lack of worry over every little scratch down the road. This will be a learning experience if I decide to repair it, but if the right offer came my way now I'd feel comfortable parting with it early. As with anyone repairing a salvage vehicle, I'm most curious what it's worth now and what it could be worth when I repair it. I figured worst case scenario (assuming they were tested functional) the motor, controller, charger, and chassis components could be worth anywhere from $1700 to $2000 each. At least that's what I think might be possible for someone doing a conversion of an ICE bike. I know that salvage vehicles (especially bikes) are much harder to sell and are usually valued at a fraction of what the bike is worth as used with similar condition/miles. Let me know what y'all think!

Edit: "a little under what it's worth" in this current unknown condition, agreeing that if many parts are known functioning it could be valuable or worth more.
Tl;Dr: Thanks all, I don't know what I'm doing financially on this, will update on actual operating conditions soon.

Good luck!  Hopefully everything works out for ya. Sounds like you know what you’re getting into.  Didn’t mean to be too harsh, you logic is more than sound.  I’ve considered the same myself.  Do keep us updated

Just been told by some associates I have in CA that the bike has charged up to 100%. Flying there in a few hours, more details and a write up coming. I will likely start a new repair thread if I decide against the offers I have received. Some of these were very strange from the SF bay area! Way more companies than I was expecting have reached out (even more so than individuals!) (no one on this forum yet *nudge* *nudge* *cough*-negotiable).

By the way, anyone know the former owner in CA ( I hope they are okay)? Has a white pawprint sticker on the right hand side of the "tank".. they might have sold too many in red ;P

There are a number of local companies trying to use electric powertrains in novel ways for whom a broken Zero is a find. Good luck!

Feel free to reach out locally if you have time to meet up.

I don't believe anyone I know has met the owner, given the pawprint sticker description, but I may misremember.

Personally not a big fan of salvaged bikes due to a crash.  Unless it was a soft drop, which this one is not looking at the bars, there's high chances the frame is bent.    And its not fun discovering that believe me.  I've had my own experiences buying salvaged bikes...  no thanks.

The price has to be damn good for someone to take the high risk investment, or just hate to say it, clueless and eager.

Too high priced and miles for my taste, but each their own.

Possibly someone wants it for the drive-train, but again its too high for anyone who knows what they're getting into unless its cheap enough to gamble on the risk.  There is a point of the price when people jump on it like a fish, that's for the seller to identify.

Good luck whatever you do with it.

Battery charges to 100%, that's good, but what does it do under load? Does one cell drop off the cliff, limit the capacity of the whole pack?  I have a 2014, that pack sounds interesting, but, yeah, steep price.

You found it! Yup that's my lucky find. Sorry for the late reply but the bike is (electrically) fully functional. The front forks, handlebars, and frame took an impact and the cosmetic plastics/fairings suffered. I no longer think my price is that steep. I have a lot of confidence in this battery. I have ridden it in its current state at low speed and in sport mode. The front brakes cause the front tire to contact the battery box plastic. The forks will likely need to be replaced, possibly triple clamps. BMS and dash read NO errors (should have said Zero XD)... Does anyone know anything about frame repair for thin aluminum frames? Pictures soon (I promise). I have found but not contacted the original owner yet.

Yea, for a fully functional Zero drivetrain and battery, it's not so high.

I wouldn't try fixing the frame, I'd find someone building a kit plane or a jetski or a scooter or something.  That drivetrain's a winner, and lots of people are asking for a scooter with the Zero drivetrain.  (But maybe they are buying BMC C-Evos now : - )  )

Sorry to keep y'all hanging! I will hopefully post again shortly. Holidays had caught me unawares and have been playing catch-up ever since.
