Title: Honda fuel relay
Post by: JohnHewes on October 20, 2017, 11:21:15 PM
Hi, new here so please excuse any etiquette slip ups.
i own a 1987 Honda CBR 600, and it's been off the road for about 11 years. I have decided that I will keep it forever as one of my two bikes. the other is a 1954 velocette MAC. I have sold all the others and now have some garage space to allow me to work on these two.
The Honda has a fault I do not understand, and i am not a newcomer to motorcycle electrical problems, I have had a few!

The fuel relay does not allow the fuel pump to run. the pump runs fine if I short out the relay, and the relay is getting a full battery voltage on both the input wire and the wire from the spark unit. It only has three connections, input, output and the spark unit wire.
I have tried an other fuel relay from ebay with the same result, so invested all my pocket money in a  spanking new one, same result!
I am tearing out my few remaining grey hairs, can anyone explain my problem, or lead me to solve it, please?
Many thanks in anticipation
John

I should have said that this is a 1987 model, one of the early Jelly Mould machines.

Not an electric motorcycle, right?  There may be people here with gasoline fuel pump experience, but is electricmotorcycleforum really the place to ask this question?  Most of us are trying to get away from that fossil fuel stuff.

Anyway, 12V present isn't necessarily 12V that can flow well, you might have resistance on the line that causes voltage to drop under load, look at the connections, both on the hot line and also on the ground line, measure resistance, look for places that have poor contact.

JohnHewes you might have taken a wrong turn somewhere, this is a forum for non-ICE bikes ;)

I imagine googling for people talking about motorcycles and electricity : - )

Indeed, Erasmo, ICE may not be a familiar term to someone who rides Hondas : - )

JohnHewes, electric vehicle people refer to engines that run based on attempting to contain exploding fossils fuel as Internal Combustion Engines, or ICE, if they like being cryptic.
