Title: unable to change Custom mode.
Post by: tico on July 09, 2017, 07:23:58 AM
Hi all,

after the last time I got my motorcycle back from the factory, I have been unable to change the settings for the Custom mode using the Zero App on my android. The app shows mileage, battery state of charge, etc, so it's definitely communicating with the motorcycle. When I change max torque, or max speed, or anything else under the custom mode, it momentarily shows the setting I have set, and then a few seconds later resets back to what it was before. I have tried resetting to factory defaults in the app, reinstalling the app, and re-doing the Bluetooth pairing with the motorcycle, and nothing makes a difference.

Has anyone else experienced this or have a fix for this?

Cheers,
Tico

what bike year and model, what firmware version, what android app version?

bike is a 2014 model S (no powertank/chargetank).

I am unable to download the battery logs after the last time I got it back (so I can't confirm the bike firmware version), but Zero said that they were working on a new version of the app to resolve whatever's causing that problem. Haven't heard back from them in a while.

The bike was taken to a dealer a few weeks ago to get the latest firmware installed. I'm assuming it's fully up to date.

The app version is v1.5.7 (20)    and it's running on android 5.1 (22) if that's relevant.

Had the same problem. The fix is to download an older version of the app.

Thanks odedmaz ! That worked. Successfully changed Custom Mode settings, as well as finally being able to download battery logs from the bike, which had also been broken for quite a while.

Cheers!

Can you detail, what exact make/model/year, the decoded logs info for model / version / revision, and which android version you have, what app version does not work, what version is working?

I asked before but this needs to be documented better for the unofficial manual. This seems to be a common problem talked about on the forums.

The version of the app installed on my phone that DID NOT work, was v1.5.7 (20).
I installed odedmaz' suggestion, v1.2.8 and it IS working.
still on same android phone, 5.1 (22) (on a Motorola Moto G)
Bike is 2014 Zero model S (no chargetank or powertank) - MBB logs say it is:
Firmware rev.      52
Board rev.         1
Model              SS

Hope this helps

Thanks, Rico. When I get a chance to try a couple of old versions I have stashed I'll try to narrow down further too.

I also recently hit this roadblock.

Just had my firmware/software updated to the latest versions (will post version # once I can) and can change the custom settings but bike will not save them. I have app version 1.3.0 (4) and because I'm using an iPhone, can not install an earlier version of the Zero app.

Hope this gets fixed in an update soon.

I am so happy that I never update anything - if I get a choice, of course.  My motto is if it is working OK and you don't have and complaints just leave things alone.   ;)

I can confirm that the 1.3.17 version of the app (from backups) *works* on my 2014 Zero SR and that the current version *fails* in that it rolls back any changes to custom mode within seconds.  I don't know whether any versions between work.  I did not test trip reset.

Togo, that's really good news for android owners but if you have an iPhone, rolling back versions is very difficult.

Anyone have a fix for the apple fan boys? (Myself included)

Yeah, I think Shadow's tests were Android as well.

The best route for iPeople right now is probably to call Zero customer service, be clear to them what the problem is, maybe they can revert the version in the apple store or fork it so there's a version that works for the older bikes.

Just a ‘me-too’ post but as an iPhone user, I borrowed a friends android phone, side loaded the Zero app (V1.2.8) from this forum and was able to make changes to custom settings and them save to the bike (Zero S ‘14).

I’ve also contacted zero with the recommendations from this forum. Ie. Release this previous version in the App Store as: ‘Zero - 2014’ or ‘Zero - Compatibility’ so that some of us can make changes. Or they could update the new app to work on our bikes again.

Either way, there is a current work around and all you need to do is plead to a friend to borrow their phone!

Zero reports the issue has been addressed in the new version released this past week.

I've updated the app and it still doesn't save custom settings (2013 zero s) it does connect faster and without me having to manually connect

The app, that was automatically updated at the end of July, continues to save the custom setting on my 2014S.  ???

If nothing helps, your dealer is able to set the custom mode manually via the diagnostic tool.

It did not : - (

If you were previously affected by the "can't change change custom mode" issue and have updated to the latest version of the Zero Motorcycles app, and are still having the problem, please email support@zeromotorcycles.com with subject line "still unable change custom mode" and the year and model of your motorcycle, and the version of the app. I'm told this is the best way to get this issue past Zero Support to the attention of Zero Engineering. I've got two reports that 2013 models are still affected, and can now confirm that my 2014 SR is also affected.

You can get the app version from within the app by touching the support icon and then"about this app"

This goes for iphone people as well.

Indeed, especially for iphone people, since rolling back versions is so difficult in ios.

Anyone report to Zero, get any word from Zero that they are fixing this issue?

Being able to adjust custom mode is pretty important.

If you call and leave a message to say when you sent the email and what the topic is, I usually get a response within 2-3 business days.

When I emailed Zero about the CA rebate program not receiving their 2018 model VIN numbers, they got back to me in only 3 hours. So I guess it depends upon how important your question is to them.   ::)

Yeah.  Supporting older bikes on non-safety-related issues doesn't seem to be a priority.

It's one of the reasons I'm not buying a new bike from Zero right away.  I like expensive things I buy to last a while.

I relented and got a firmware update ( first time) on my 2014 DS to try and fix this  after advice from Zero. Updated everything but the custom won’t work, and it says my range is now 24,567kms. Zero have been great on phone and email, working with out only local dealer to update their software.

Hey all, any news about a software update to correct this issue?

Nigezero, my app also says 253,000km to empty as well on a 2014 Zero S (no power tank). This is the last small issue to fix before my Zero is perfect!

If anyone reads this from Zero, please update the app/firmware.

[...] it says my range is now 24,567kms.

my app also says 253,000km to empty as well on a 2014 Zero S (no power tank).

When I updated the phone app it showed over 600km range ... I wouldn't be complaining if this figure wasn't so far off the mark  8)
Now that I drove over 2000km with this new app version since it came out in October, this estimate is getting closer and closer to a correct estimate.

Having the same problem since the firmware update on my 2013 XU.  I'm on iOS, so not sure if there's any way to downgrade to a previous release of the app.

I called Zero's technical support and the guy on the other end said he had never heard of this issue, but was going to look into it.  That was over a month ago….

New version, 1.6.71, appeared in the Google Play Store Android app store.

I installed it in my Nexus 6p and attempted to set the Custom Mode Regen and and Custom More Top Speed on my 2014 SR.

As before, it appears to take the setting, but when you revisit, the values return to where they were.

Going back to 1.3.17, installed from backup, which works.

Kind of makes you wonder what these various Zero software and firmware "updates" are actually supposed to do.   ???

Although that's hardly ever done in the automobile/motorcycle sector it would be nice if they publicized a release note with the updates.
Perhaps together with a chapter "known issues".

That info can be a real treasure trove for troubleshooting ... especially for early adopters.

Sorry to bring up the old thread.  But, I had the same issue with my 2014 FX (that I just bought used a month ago).
The latest App didn't work.  I installed the old app listed here and was able to make changes to Custom mode.

App also told me that my bike firmware was out of date.  I went to the dealer and they upgraded my MBB from 42 to 53 and BMS from 29 to 30.  My battery pack is from recall replacement, so it's 2x3.6KW type.

This upgrade of course reset my Custom mode settings.  I then installed the latest Google Play version of Zero App and was able to connect, set up Custom mode, and have the settings persist.

So, conclusion: update your 2014 at the dealer if you want to use the latest App.

PS: The difference between apps is minimal, but I wanted the Portrait mode, since my $8 phone holder can only hold the phone vertical.

My app was working fine for my 2013 FX and 2016 SR. Recently, while riding for most of the day, whenever I would stop, it seemed as though
my phone ( Motorola G5+ ) had rebooted during the ride. Ever since, ( about a week ) whenever I try to pull up the app, it hangs at the
Searching for Vehicle screen. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, downgraded, all to no avail. I know that this is a problem with my phone and not the app.
Just wondering If anyone has had any similar issue. I boot an old phone and the app still works fine with both bikes.
Thank you for any insight.

Do other BT apps work ?  Car or headset ?

I also noticed that if app doesn't respond right away, I need to go into Settings of Android, and in Bluetooth section remove the motorcycle entry.  Sometimes just setting it to not "Autoconnect" works.
Then, you want to again pair in Android Bluetooth settings, not through the app.  Then start the Zero app.

Hi all,

As an update to the custom mode saving changes, it now works and has been for a few months now.

I just had to update the bike firmware, update the app and reset the Bluetooth connection but the step that fixed the issue was updating the firmware.

I have a 2014 S and can post software versions if it helps anyone.

Now just to have the SoC calculation fixed.

Other Bluetooth devices work, Fitbit, OBDII for Volt, etc. I was about to do a factory reset when I decided to take advice from BigKuma and go to phone settings.
Cleared everything, did a refresh and it once again works. Thank you BigKuma.
