Title: Electric Fools Day Ride, Mt. Tam, Stinson Beach, April 1, no foolin'
Post by: togo on March 25, 2017, 07:08:21 AM

Ride to Mt. Tam, continue to Stinson Beach. https://goo.gl/maps/6tu931uGRq82 (https://goo.gl/maps/6tu931uGRq82)

Meet here: https://api.plugshare.com/view/location/44604, (https://api.plugshare.com/view/location/44604,) come early if you need to charge. I'll come early, plug in my J-plug 5-bike C13 splitter, hang out by the Google Starbuck wifi at the North end of the mall. If you need some level 1 charging, feel free park next to mine and plug into my splitter.

Lunch at Siren Canteen, get there by noon, beat the lunch rush.

Brian confirms the food is good, and the charger is capable. No guarantees we'll get it, but 101 to the beach is just 21 miles and our Zeros are efficient.

I'll try to make it.  Normally on a Saturday I don't get 3 hours off from the rug rats but for this I might get permission.

I live in Larkspur so even with the S 6.5 I should be able to do the circuit on a charge.

Great! We'll do what we can to help out if you can make it. If you don't quite have the time, you could ride with us on the outbound leg and turn back when you need to.

This is definitely on my radar! As of today the weather forecast looks good.

I need to think about logistics. I'm 55 miles from the start point, and *think*
I could get there from Livermore, do the ride, then recharge before
riding home -- assuming I keep my speed  to a (boring) 55mph on the leg from Livermore to
Corte Madera. (recharge: I recently bought two elcon chargers)

Question: my brother has a *pretty loud* Kawasaki Vulcan 750, and may be interested in accompanying us.
Please let me know if anyone would be uncomfortable with this. (Don't worry, at 118# he doesn't bite,
or wear serious leather. He just rides a noisy bike.)

It's about 200mi to the starting location from where I am. I've got one 3.3kW SCv2 plus the onboard 1.4kW total 4.7kW charging capability.

Travel 2 hours Kings Beach CA to Citrus Heights CA (100mi). Charge for 2.5 hours.
Travel 2 hours Citrus Heights CA to Corte Madera CA (100mi). Charge for 2.5 hours.

Or if I am going a little quicker, that's 1.5hr recharge to 80% three times plus 3 hours travel, total 7.5 hours.

That's between 7.5 and 9 hours to get there. I'll have to start at midnight before. Tempting...

Super tempted to do this but I might go on a longer trip same weekend, it's not exactly clear just yet.

I don't know if I'll be able to make this but I will try to.

Question - If I am a pretty inexperienced rider ( been riding for < 1yr & do 90% of my riding in SF proper) should I not go? I wouldn't want to ruin the ride for you all by being a straggler the entire time.

I love Mt Tam.

I will be camping in Tomales bay that day, so I cant make it.

If you have time/ charge, you should to Ridgecrest Blvd where they film all the Car commercials.  Amazing views along most of it.

Fairfax- Bolinas Road to HYW 1 is tight curvy fun too with less traffic than Panoramic.

The Fairfax-Bolinas Road, just beyond the golf course, is closed for the foreseeable future due to a landslide.   :(

I am pretty sure the section of BoFax road from Hwy 1 near Stinson up to Ridgecrest is still open though. That makes for a nice return loop from Stinson.

Like the press release says, you can't get anywhere near Ridgecrest.  Which means that you can't take that road to Mt. Tam or to Bolinas or to Stinson Beach.  :( All you can do is drive 3 miles up to the golf course and return back to downtown Fairfax.

Maybe I am reading it differently than you are, but to me "The closed section is from Azalea Hill Trailhead (about three miles southwest of downtown Fairfax) to Ridgecrest Boulevard (in the hills above Stinson Beach)" means it's open from Ridgecrest down to Hwy One.

Just spent 12 hours getting the bike ready. I had to figure out how the chargetank bracket kit installs, which I have it mounted securely now but it's not certain if I did it correctly. Removing the tank lock and installing the bracket requires some tools in really tight spaces, also later figuring out after the fact that I could remove one of the bolts for the ABS module and rotate the brake lines with it out of the way. I installed a 3'ft right-angled C13 cord semi-permanently under the left side lower plastics and routed up into the SCv2 area so it will always be plugged in. I removed the rubber boot covers for the C13 receptacle on the bike and also the SBX app connector for the aux charger. I cleaned up the SCv2 routing a lot. Going to ask for the day off and do some more route planning.

I tried taking pictures and I got some, but not all, of the shots that I wanted to take. The camera phone is not easy to work with it was shutting off randomly in the cold. Also the lighting wasn't much good and varied a lot.

SCv2 with onboard is a minimum requirement for me to be able to make this trip so there's that.   Also I think a used aerostich roadcrafter suit arrives in the mail tomorrow - hope it fits!

Now I see what you are saying.  Since my daughter lives in Fairfax and we like to hike the Cataract trail, I was thinking of going from Fairfax to Ridgecrest.  However, you are suggesting going from Mt.Tam SP to Stinson Beach, via Ridgecrest. I agree, that would be a nice ride.  You could return to 101 by way of Sir Francis Drake Blvd for a very scenic trip.  :)

Not to be negative nelly, but forecast is for a beautiful sunny day this Saturday.  At 10:30 that road is going to be fairly busy with minivans and SUVs driving to Stinson Beach.  Tough road to pass on because so twisty.  This is my backyard riding course, but generally I only ride it on weekdays.

I'm sure it will be a nice ride regardless, but maybe a little slower than folks would ideally want.

^this, especially since much of Hwy One (the more touristy/alternate route to Stinson) is closed due to slides, which will put all the weekend beach traffic onto Panoramic.

I would recommend that if the intent is to include a stop at East Peak like I see on the route map, that from there the ride go along Ridgecrest, down BoFax Rd to One, and then into Stinson. Panoramic would be a fine return route as it has much less traffic going back towards Mill Valley at that time of day.

So I won't be able to make it to the ride since I'm busy until roughly 1 o'clock on Saturdays, but I'm just up in San Rafael. If anyone wants to grab a late lunch and ride a little later in the afternoon around Marin, I should be free!

I like that there's a lot of interest! Try to RSVP on the Facebook page so we know who to expect!

Also, I was reminded that Google Maps on web and mobile now support location sharing, which could be helpful if you need to communicate your position to a person or group for a limited time. This helps when rendezvousing for a motorcycle ride since you can't just text "on my way! here..." while riding safely.

If for no other purpose, my email is (this username) at gmail just in case this is necessary.

Add a way to share state of charge and things get interesting for longer group EV travel. For the ham radio operators my call sign is AI6FS, and I can run my APRS capable handheld for position and short messages, though I digress. Great suggestion!

Something went wrong with the J1772 inlet so I have to fix that, waiting for parts, we'll see if I can make it to the ride. @Chicamungo hope to meet you soon :) maybe the 1st or another ride.

You can rapid-charge.  Cool.  I think I recall Brian or Brandon saying the Voltas can to 9000-10000 watts.

Sure, bring him along.  It'll be good contrast.  As long as his emissions are in control : - )   or he rides at the back.  It'll be a good experiment, and we can use it as a test case.

OK, so we need to leave promptly.  And we need to ride at a *relaxed* pace.  Which is appropriate, since we'll have newbies along.  Enjoy the twisties at a level that's comfortable to your skill level, don't endanger others, and slow down and regroup on the straights, make sure everybody we collect back up.

I'd love to hear more about that at lunch.  I was WH6ZD for a while, passed the exam recently to get a new callsign, haven't done much with it.

I'll do location sharing to brian if I get access to it.  Apparently they are rolling the feature out in stages.

Something went wrong with the J1772 inlet so I have to fix that, waiting for parts, we'll see if I can make it to the ride. @Chicamungo hope to meet you soon :) maybe the 1st or another ride.

I'm bringing a spare J-plug to C13 adapter, does that help?  I expect to be at the starting point, charging, from 8-10, and I could give you my spare, in SF, earlier.  There's also a free Volta at Stonestown Mall, out west, SF south Sunset district.

Hope I didn't miss anyone.  Hope to see you all there.

By the way, everyone, connectivity may be limited once we leave the 101 corridor, you can predownload maps in gmaps ("offline areas", "select your own area")

I will be passing by on my Zero on the way to visiting my daughter and her family in Fairfax tomorrow.  I need to perform some maintenance on the brakes of her 2012S and then we will be going for a hike at the water district's open space areas below Mt. Tam. Looks to be a really nice day.  :)

I'm psyched! Looks like the wind should be much calmer tomorrow morning.
I plan to be at the mtg point at 9-ish. I can almost certainly get to the starting
point and do the ride without recharging, so if anyone wants to use my elcon chargers
at the start or at lunch (assuming we can get access),  you're welcome to them.

Yes I might need the help. I charged successfully at 4kW today from an RV park L14-50 outlet, which narrows down my EVSE charging problems to the signal pin on my J1772 inlet that's missing a connection. Repair parts are shipped but won't arrive today. I'll be limited in quick charging locations and times to finding an RV park during office hours and try to plug in to the 50A service, and whatever charging gear I can rig up from other riders.  The bike is on slow charge now some hours left to go. This is going to be a little more of an adventure than I'd hoped but I'm encouraged there may be a way to fast charge once I'm near the other riders.

Besides RV parks are there any sources of 50A service in the middle of the night between Reno and SF Bay?

Yes, Specifically, the Volta chargers at the Macy's is the departure point.  And the hangout point for people charging would be the coffee/wifi/breakfast places at the north end of the mall.  Nordstroms.

slow charging now in west sacramento, going to hope I can make it to Fairfield for a 50A outlet, then fast charge until I gotta leave to make it there. was pretty close to skipping the slow charge, have made that before but the disparity is 15% SoC not worth getting stranded for. people on highways really drive too fast to take it easy.

My 2014 SR has 4-20% SoC discrepancy too.

See you there.  It's still 3 hours till departure, and others can help you top-up.  I'll be there from 8AM with my J1772-C13 and C14-C19 adapters if they help.  If you can use the direct 220 from C14 or C20, it should get you past your signalling issue.  Look for me at the north end of the mall, at the google starbucks wifi point.  Sticker-covered helmet.

Got messages that Nathanael, Jon, and Shadow are running a little late, so we'll get going a little late.

Inside the Boudin now, charging phones, using the google wifi.

first thought, you have it upside down.

second thought, if you turn it upside down, the weatherproof door is in the way.

is that the point?  damn.

Shutting down the laptop, heading to the charging/meetup site.

David and Brian & E are probably already there.

We'll wait for Nathanael and Jon but not for Shadow.  Ideally, we'll see Richard230, Chicamungo, and Shadow at Siren Canteen.

I'm at 415-735-4115 for texting purposes.

Great riding, enjoyed meeting y'all, and learned a lot. Definitely recommend the tacos.
Got home  to Livermore with 16%  charge. Would be less, but traffic on 580 was
slow in places ;)

That was fun...certainly had a different feel than a loud group of Ducatis rolling down the road does...hope everyone made it home safely.

Shadow made it! He rolled in a bit late, but we still had a good time over more food and beer.

I think we missed Chicamungo and Richard230 but everyone else made it.

tamjam, you did a great job getting us around the local roads; that was much appreciated.

I did miss most of the group, but that was me who came in even later than Shadow, sorry I don't know if I ever mentioned my username.

Unrelated, but I did send you some pictures through PM, but maybe it didn't actually send? Let me know if you didn't get it please.

Ah, we were confused about whether you were Adan or not.

I got them, thanks! Okay to post them to the wiki?

Yeah of course! I also added in the measurement under the "lift" section. I didn't know how to write the information well, so I'll leave that to you. https://www.cyclegear.com/accessories/trackside-rear-paddock-stand (https://www.cyclegear.com/accessories/trackside-rear-paddock-stand) This is the rear stand I have too, if you want you to add that to the wiki.

Sorry I missed it.  It was a possibility up to the last minute, but then my wife's plans for taking the kids to a friend's house fell through, and I got bogged down in the usual toddler/baby weekend quagmire.  Kind of par for the course these days, but disappointing nonetheless.

> Sorry I missed it.  ...

It was a blast.  First crowd did the ride, seven bikes, nine people, then most of them left and then two stragglers showed up and we had a whole second chat session.  Awesome to meet you all, and awesome Shadow made it eventually, what a ride adventure.

Thanks again for taking the routing load off my mind.  My role as the rear-view-mirror max-visibility tail worked out great.

It was my pleasure to lead the route. Plenty more where that came from. Lots of nice roads in the West Marin area.

Did I pass anyone here on the board on my way home along Panoramic? Saw someone in a red Aerostitch suit on what looked like a DS when I did a quick double-take.

@togo hero status hosting me for the night. The adventure continues... worth all the trouble for what was my first ever moto group ride, just lovely!

Brand new red aerostitch?  Yeah, that would have been Shadow!  After you guys left we had a whole second party!

Next ride April 22, this time Los Gatos to Scotts Valley, Rumble Fish, Zero Factory

http://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=6778.msg54737#msg54737 (http://electricmotorcycleforum.com/boards/index.php?topic=6778.msg54737#msg54737)

I posted it on the main news forum, since, really, pretty much any electric motorcyclist is invited, not just Zero owners, and certainly not just 2013+ owners.  Indeed if a gasoline e-curious lady or gentleman were to show up, I don't think we'd turn them away.

For those of you who F'book:

Not planning a ride to Alice's this month, see this discussion at

OTOH, at least one person seemed like they wanted to do Alice's anyway.  Don't let me stop you.  The traditional date, third Saturday, is open, tho it is too close to Taxes for my comfort.
