Title: Any trashed Main Bike Boards, etc.?
Post by: Fred on February 18, 2017, 12:13:21 AM
Has anyone got a scrap main bike board or anything interesting like that? I don't have a need for one but would be interested in looking round at the internals and writing it up for the wiki.

I play around with microcontrollers and electronics as a hobby, so I'd be keen to find out what microcontroller it uses. Maybe the debug pins are broken out so we can pull or upload firmware without a trip to the dealer. I doubt modification or custom firmware would be viable but you never know.

Happy to cover postage if you've got one gathering dust. (I'm in the UK.) If it's worth anything to you then probably best you hang onto it.

I should have some dead ones. I'll take a look.

Thanks. Obviously if anything looks repairable I'll be happy to patch them up and send them back.

I've been having a careful poke around on my FXS. So far, just disassembled the dash. Not sure if there's anything worth writing up on the wiki, but this is what I found.

There's a PIC28F25K80 microcontroller. I'm not too familiar with PICs but from the specs it's fairly puny. I doubt this is doing much more than listening to CAN messages telling it what to display. Maybe handling small stuff like setting the time. Basically it's a dashboard and nothing more hidden in there.

There's a MCP2551 CAN transceiver. There's a large CP2653 LCD driver to drive all those segments on the display. There's a coin cell battery - probably just for the clock.

I'd have thought that the most interesting thing you could do poking around in here might be to the change the startup animation.

I've wondered if the smartphone app could possibly set the time, or is there no connection?

There's no Bluetooth connection directly to the dash. It would be possible for Zero to add this functionality to MBB code I suppose, but i doubt they will.

I've been wanting to take mine apart. I kinda looked at it but rode it instead. Was there just the 4 screws on the back? The reason I wanted to take it apart was to make a template for a screen protector. Tried to do this with painters tape and such but it is difficult to get it perfect.

It's easy enough to take the dash apart. I didn't even disconnect it.

Remove or even loosen the cable ties so you have some slack in the cable to the dash. Undo the two nyloc nuts that hold it in place. Undo the 6 or 8 tiny screws on the back. If you want to see the back of the PCB rather than just the LCD then there are 4 more screws. Nothing nasty like those elastomeric LCD connectors that tend to fall out and never quite work right again.

If you take the dash apart it is difficult to get a good seal again. Which can result in it getting fogged up. Just be careful and make sure to try and get it sealed back up properly.

Nice, I'll try to write this up about the dash.
