Title: Can I convert a electric bobber bike into a UK registered motorcycle ?
Post by: Testpilot1 on February 17, 2017, 03:16:53 PM
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, tough love if needs be.
Came across this electric bicycle manufacturer in UK, and wondered how I could adapt this to make a 40 mile round trip commuter.

Sourced  a 5000 W hub motor/battery/running gear supplier on eBay,would that do the job ?

Does anyone know if I would be able to road register the adapted result,is it a simple process ?

I think the biggest problem will be registering a bicycle as a motorcycle, I'm not sure of the exact whereabouts but the UK will probably have some minimum requirements.

I know registering an electric bicycle as a motorbike has been done. I regenerative seeing a thread on Endless Sphere about it. In fact, that's probably a good place to start for any info on the conversion. I'm not sure if that sort of range is realistic or if I'd want to do 40 miles on that bike anyway. ES would definitely be the place to go to find out though.

Here's one, for instance

If I used a bobber rolling chassis such as this, can anybody advise on what battery / motor combo I would need to achieve the 40 mile range at 50 mph ?

Would this fit the bill in the motor / controller department ? Can anyone offer advice as to what  battery I would need for the intended range

I checked your pointer out thankyou. Looks like these requirements are layed down in a 200 page MSVA handbook.
Basically it looks like there are different requirements depending on wether the bike does upto 30 MPH , or 30 MPH +
But it appears as long as its not over 11KW lighting is all legal and works, has adequate brakes and tyres for the bikes weight, its pretty straight forward, and your good to go.

Have you looked into the enertrac hub motor, this might be a better option than offshore eBay motors
