I never saw that specifically as a US Navy electrician (used a different specific technique), and I would not expect most people to know that.
There's no shame in using a wire tap if it suits your needs, and either no one's around to help you get the skills right, or it's just not worth your time to do it better.
That said, that is a good technique that I will try to use more often. Here's an explanation I found that doesn't use the obnoxious "manly man" leed and offers explanatory text instead of making you scan a video:
