Title: Please post if you get a FX and RedShift in the same place at the same time :)
Post by: lolachampcar on November 29, 2016, 05:02:03 AM
I love the looks of the RedShift but am concerned about the learning curve that all manufacturers go through.  The sane side of me says buy an FX while the boy in me craves the RedShift.  Would love to hear impressions of the two experienced on the same day.

I would like to see a head to head race! The supermoto versions as well, but only if the Zero wins! Haha. Alta is claiming 120ft/lbs of torque which is no joke. Guess we'll have to wait and see!

A race between both will increase performance on both, who will organize this race? i am impatient to see it :-)

I also would love to see a head to head of these two, the specs look pretty close.  The Alta has more torque while the FX has more horsepower.  The Alta might be quicker off the line but tops out at 65.  The Zero probably has a stronger midrange as it has peak power around 4300 rpm.  The Zero single module is slightly lighter, but with reduced power, the dual module is heavier but also more power.  The FX can do 85 mph.  The other difference is battery, looks like the Alta is 5.8 kWh and the Zero is 6.5 kWh.

So the specs are relatively close, maybe a little edge on the Zero with the larger battery, more power, higher speed, and ability to ride on the street with lights and signals.  You would think the Alta would cost just a little less or about the same, but its about $4500 more for some reason which also leans heavily towards the Zero.  And the last thing would be experience and reliability.  Zero has had millions of miles of real world customer feedback and failures to learn from that only expose themselves over time.  The Redshift looks well built but only time will tell if it holds up as well.

However for strictly off road, at speeds under 65, and if money or maximum range isn't a consideration, and if reliability isn't a deal breaker if something goes wrong, there is no doubt the Redshift looks like it could be fun to ride too.

Hopefully one of the motorcycle magazines can do a head to head soon.  I'd love to see their comparison and take on it.

The Alta might be quicker off the line but tops out at 65.

Imagine if you regeared the FX to top out at 65... it would be more peppy than the redshift.

+1 - quieter too.  I still want an Alta though :) - maybe next year.

My bike's on the stand with 10/65 sprockets (@ 70mph) & chain laid out next to it.  As soon as I get some time they're going on, probably just in time for the first snow.

there is also that the readshift have better breaks, better suppension, better chasi, less power, less battery, so the duel should bee nice to see, what is the best compromise for the race.
on mie sr i am not able to use it on full power all the time, du to temperature isu what will be the readshift with liquide cooling and the fx with air cooling?
hope to see this soon

The Alta might be quicker off the line but tops out at 65.

According to Alta's web site the redshift tops out at 80 not 65. This would make a comparison really interesting, especially now with the IPM motor in the FX.

The fx is a dual sport bike, while the Redshift mx is a 100â„… off road bike (not even sure it is licenced to ride on road).

A better comparison will be between the super motos versions (fxs).

I would bet on the RedShift especially if the course is technical.

It seems some specs are being mixed up - the MX is 65 the SM is 80.
It looks like the MX has 15 teeth sprocket on the front and 45 on the back giving a 3:1 reduction.
That gives 360 (120 X 3) ft/lbs of torque at the back wheel.
The FX has 351 (78 X 4.5) if you change the gearing to last years (78 X 5) = 390

Not talking about gearing specs. The redshift MX can take much more abuse off road than the FX, due to its better components (brakes, suspension, chassis...)

I would also suspect that if feels lighter as 1/2 its battery is low in the frame where as the whole battery is high in the frame for the FX.
But the redshift battery only lasts 1,000 cycles, so thats not so good. The price of cutting edge tech.

The RC model industry teaches that there is a trade off between high C discharge capability and high cycle life.  It would not surprise me at all to think that Zero prioritizes longevity while Alta looks to higher discharge capability.

As for durability, I would think the extra $5K would buy you much better components.

I rode them both within a few days and they are both great machines.  If you are a racer and the upgraded components matter to you  to the tune of $5,000 the get an Alta.  But if you want a powerful, lightweight bike that has nearly the same characteristics, grab the FX.

I'm not a racer, so I didn't notice much of a difference, but the components on the Alta seemed a bit better.  However, the FX can be bought and delivered today, whereas Alta is still slowly ramping up production.

Did you ride the 2016 FX or 2017 FX with the Alta?

Thanks for that info.....  I was kinda hoping that was the case (as I've no intention of racing the bike but weight and street feel are important to me).

I was in San Fran for the test rides in July.
