Title: New Farasis Cell

Thanks to Simone for posting on FB, I'm not sure if he's on here.

I know some folks don't use Facebook.  I struggle to keep up with it myself and much prefer this forum for discussion.

Anyhow, it's great news and I'm sure we all hope the new cell makes it into the 2017 model. No mention of maximum charge rate though. There was hope that it would go up to 2C. That would give us the potential to rapid charge to 80% in 20-30 minutes with CHAdeMO. Now that would be peachy! :-)

The only problem would be heat. The cells would require liquid cooling like Tesla cells. That would increase size, weight and cost. Along with CHAdeMO integration, I imagine the price point would be too high for many. It may also take a year or two of development and testing by Zero. Fingers crossed for 2019/20 models?

I would have thought that Zero would be "in the know" with Farasis and may have been involved in testing for many months now.
In the software world Microsoft gives product developers the new changes way before releasing them to the public so that there applications are ready to go at announcement time.

I hope that's the case too. Increasing range each year has to be a top priority for any EV manufacturer. I think it will remain so until vehicles can easily do more miles in a day than the rider or driver can cope with. People really don't like having to charge. There is inconvenience and anxiety around the whole process. Plugging in at night is fine. Charging on the move requires planning, reliance on the availability of rapids and expensive charging equipment. Unless you enjoy the planning aspect, it's a pain in the arse. I'm learning that by running a Kia Soul EV that already does the whole 80% charge in 30 minutes thing. I simply want more range.

And speaking of charging anxiety, IC drivers around here don't think a thing about parking in spaces reserved for "clean air vehicles", which are required by local cities when a new business is approved to be painted in the parking lot.  It doesn't take long for IC owners (the bigger the better) to learn that there is no enforcement of these parking restrictions on private property and hog the spots without any concern for "clean air vehicles". 

So far, where I ride, I have only seen a couple of public charging stations in 5 years of riding electric motorcycles.  There is one near my home that has never been used because it is in the truck loading area behind a Safeway and you wouldn't want to leave your vehicle parked there for any length of time.  I know of another one in a nearby city that is hidden away in a public garage.  I have seen IC vehicles parked in those spots, too.  Apparently the parking attendants don't care about that as long as they pay their parking fee. So for me, the larger the battery pack the better. 

My observation is that you just can't depend on finding a public charging station when riding outside an urban area and if you find one, you can't depend upon it not being occupied or still working. If charging stations were overseen by a full-time attendant like you see at most gas stations, I think many of these issues would be resolved. 

Personally I would like to see charging stations integrated into gas/convenience stores, but I guess that is not going to happen until big oil discovers a way to make more money from EV than IC by using lots of oil.  Say, how about using oil to generate electricity and use that to make hydrogen, which can then be used to produce electricity that will then run an electric motor to power a vehicle down the road? ::)

Plus, it must really irritate the oil companies that electric motors don't even use fancy and expensive synthetic oil in their crankcases. The oil used in my BMW is selling for $17 a liter and I have a friend that owns a KTM 690 Duke who says the very special oil used in his motorcycle sells for almost $25 a liter.   :o  )

To say nothing about the lack of even an "oil thread" on an EV forum.  Discussing which oil is best is far and away the most popular subject in the IC world.   ;)

Richard230, are you aware of PlugShare? It's generally difficult to find charging stations by looking around for them. There may be more than you are aware of.

The gas station thing is starting to happen. Two that I recall reading about are Sheetz stations (don't know where those are, not in my state) and BP stations in NC.

Speaking of cells, I've wondered why Farasis has a published datasheet on the 25Ah cells but only press releases for the newer models. It'd be nice to get some basic documentation to confirm what the press release blurbs and hearsay indicate.
