Title: How many bikes has Zero made?
Post by: domingo3 on September 16, 2016, 06:23:46 PM
Can anything be gleened from the VINs?  Mr Trice  8) indicated that the last 5 digits of the VIN are the same as the serial number.  My serial number is 6439.  Could this mean the 6439th Zero?  An article from a couple years ago indicated Zero made 1300 bikes in 2014 and planned to produce 1800 in 2015.  (http://www.latimes.com/business/autos/la-fi-hy-electric-motorcycle-20150307-story.html (http://www.latimes.com/business/autos/la-fi-hy-electric-motorcycle-20150307-story.html))  Like many of you, I get a lot of questions from random people about my Zero.  It would be nice to be able to talk a little about the total sales and rate of growth.  I'd also be curious to know about how many FXSs there are out there besides mine.  When I lived in the Bay Area, I'd see a Zero on the road now and again.  Now that I'm in Augusta GA, I feel like I'm on the only electric bike within my range.

Zero is a privately held company, and it's the investors choice not to officially release sales numbers, so I'm not sure how this article got this information.  It says "the company said" but I don't ever remember the company saying that in any press release or anything, and they don't name anyone from the company in that statement.  Although since it wasn't contested by anyone, I guess the numbers could be a good ball park number.

I don't think there is any question that sales are going up every year with this year being a huge jump.  While you might not be able to ask Zero directly, if you have followed Hollywood Electrics on social media the past few years, you notice they post photos of their new additions to the Hollywood Electrics family when an owner takes delivery of their new Zero.  The frequency of these posts as been increasing each year.  And this year was just wild!  It seemed for a while this summer there were 2 or 3 new owners a week, sometimes it was every other day I felt.  So for sure this year is their best ever for Hollywood Electrics.   And since that is just one dealer, and the number of dealers has easily doubled or tripled or maybe more in the last two years if you look at the dealer map on the Zero webpage often.  So if you do some simple math it's not hard to see the company is growing and demand for these bikes is increasing fast with this year growing at a higher number AND rate than the previous few years.  I can only expect this to continue each year as the bikes go further for the same or less cost, and get better and more refined all around.

Well Domingo I'm about 30 mins southwest of Atlanta (but yes out of range) so there are a few of us here.  I'm in the heart of a Harley country but I'm used to it.  We do have a new dealer but north of Atlanta, One down in Savannah would be a good spot I think.  The story you posted from March 2015 show a bit has changed.  Mission is dead, Lightning I guess is dead/never lived, Brammo is dead/adopted, Energica is trying to grow but they need VERY fertile soil.
That leaves little Zero and Alta to carry the torch, ok a few Victories, I hope they can get the market share to live on as a stand alone but we'll see.
I'd like to see them take an active roll in the used market.
Standard trade in prices and "certified" used bikes with a one year warranty would help ease new bike buyers nerves about deprecation and budget minded people could go used with a bit of reassurance.

Transparency is not Zero's strong suit.  Its a disappointment as they should really lead in this area.  Perhaps they will figure that out sooner or later.   But as Zero Apologist (tm) Electronic Terry has pointed out they are a private company and are not required to release those numbers.

In Australia government releases new vehicle registration info , its a list of each make and model of how many registered for use on road. that would give you some idea if your governments have same info.

Not sure what your beef is with Zero or why you think transparency in sales figures is so important, but there's no need for name calling. Especially Terry who is a huge supporter of the community and one of the most genuine people I've ever met.

Thanks Harlan, I'm sure gingerjet didn't mean any harm.  But gingerjet please understand, it's not something "they" (Zero) need to figure out.  If the investment company chooses for something to be public or not, it's their choice to do that.  It's public info that the same company also brought the company Weight Watchers to success.  They know what they are doing and are very good at it.  Where many other electric motorcycle companies that used to be out there are now gone, Zero is bigger than ever, and I would guess that 95% or more of all electric motorcycles sold on the planet ever, are from Zero.

While it's easy to say "they should do this" "they should do that" the truth is whatever they are doing is working and working very well.  And all of us that get to ride one every day are very thankful.

I think it is just a case of Zero enthusiasts wondering how many other people around the world are just as enthusiastic as they are about Zeros.    ;D  Sometimes when you can't find answers to your important questions, you can get a little frustrated.  However, I took gingerjet's little dig at Terry as sort of a "wink" and not anything meant to be derogatory.  ;)  After all, Terry is a great spokesperson for Zero, even if he doesn't have a trademark yet.   :)

At the 10th anniversary Party I asked how many bikes they made in the last year.  They would not say, but they did tell me that they made ~400 more bike in the last year.  I asked what % what that and they said 30%. So by simple math they are making ~1330 bikes a year now.

You could also look up the US model count with the NHTSA recall numbers. Just look up recalls that effect all bikes for that model year, and you know how many US bikes there are.
