Title: Energica Ego, Eva first ride / reviews
Post by: protomech on January 22, 2016, 12:53:17 PM
A couple of reviews have come out recently.

Cycle World rode an Eva prototype:

MCN rode the Ego:

Nice write up by Cycle World but really looking forward to an in-depth review. I think the Eva has the ability to attract buyers who would otherwise buy a Zero SR. I know DCFC isn't available until late 2016 but that is a big deal for me. But Energica really needs a dealer on the east coast. Would love to try out an Ego or Eva but not willing to fly from NC to CA just for that.

I am leaning toward jumping into the EM market. I like a lot of what Zero has done but the Energica as well as the Lightning LS218 really have caught my attention. While I am in Bay area of California now, I maybe moving away so that would make support even more of a challenge.

The Zero isn't quite what I want as I'd lean toward more of a superbike styled bike so the Energica appeals to me. OTOH the Zero FXS could be a lot of fun. If I rode mostly in the Bay area, the limited range wouldn't be such an issue. If I leave, I'll need at least 120 miles at 70-80 mph.

Welcome to the electric motorcycle market! You were definitely talking about two very different price points. The Energica  and the lightning are considerably more expensive than a zero.

Also I know that lightning is only offering support in the Bay Area for now.  Energica can only support you near one of their dealers. Zero has a far more extensive dealer support network. I totally understand what you mean about styling though.

I am not as much concerned about the price points as I am getting what I can use/enjoy the most. I currently am in the Bay Area which is great for now with Lightning as you mentioned. I really like the looks of it and the performance is definitely something I would enjoy. My wife says I should go to a 12 step program for motorcycles since that is how many bikes we have in the garage. :) So we worked out a deal, I thin the herd down to 4 or less and she won't complain as long as I keep the total spend under 40k all included.

So I could do 1 LS, or maybe an Eva and a Zero FXS. I've ridden all the Zeros so far and for me the most fun was the FXS as it was light, good power to weight and generally playful. I was at first most interested in the SR & DSR and while I liked them, they weren't as much fun to ride as the FXS for me. Sure, they were marginally quicker and have better range, but neither is enough to really expand what I would normally want to do with the bike other than a 50 mile RT commute. I have a longer commute on some weeks to SoCal but none of the electrics will manage that so if I get at least 60 miles I am good or I need a lot more. If I move out of the area (an option I am considering). I'll need to go at least 120 miles on the highway and no easy place to charge at work (60 there and 60 back).

So if buy a LS and leave the area, I am sort of stuck. So the Energica or Zero would be more practical for me but my heart says LS. One thing I keep suggesting to Zero is make a FXSR model by dropping in the higher output motor they put in the SR and DSR. If they did that, I'd be an instant buyer, damn the range. I'd buy 2 extra battery packs and leave them at work. :)

I love instant torque and that would satisfy my craving. Most of my street bikes are tuned for broad, massive torque, rather then absolute peak power and they don't  weigh a ton like the cruisers do.  My race bike is torquey but has hard topend pull.

Now if Zero can put together a sort of streamlined SR, I might seriously consider that as well. I come from an aeronautical engineering background so that would definitely get my interest. Good aero as most everyone knows by now is like free HP. Heck, even my bicycle is almost a streamliner. I just sold my Leitra velomobile that I had electric assist on. Love the Leitra but sometimes a PITA to find a place to park it.

I agree with you on the FXSR I think they should drop that motor and 660amp controller into all their bikes and streamline to four bikes.  Ask Harlan at Hollywood Electrics I'm sure with your budget it could be done.  He'd love to put you on an Ego if you would prefer that route as well.  A little distance shouldn't be a concern.

If you want zero warentee snd 1300$$$ later... Well more after harlen has to program the bike, and 1300 for the bigger motor ish installed probably

But man its fucking fast LOL
And 660 is pushing it, you would be lucky to get 500 safely, more with the 3.3s but still your asking for problems.....kinda

It sure seems like it could be a blast to ride. Sort of like a LS281 but in a different form factor. :)

I really have to think about it. I could maybe the Eva and do the FXSR conversion. You could surprise a heck of a lot of bikes with that conversion. I'd probably have a continuous crazy grin on my face. Just have to do in a way so my wife didn't know what was going on. I spend enough time wrenching on bikes that she sort of frowns anytime a bike parts box shows up.
