Title: Details on the EVA!
Post by: ultrarnr on November 24, 2015, 04:06:43 PM
Energica has finally posted the details on the Eva on their web site. http://www.energicasuperbike.com/ (http://www.energicasuperbike.com/)

A few of the notables:
Max Speed: 124 MPH
Max Range 124 miles
Torque: 125 ft lbs
Motor 70 Kw
Battery 11.7 KwH
4 Riding modes
4 Regen Modes
Reverse
Brembo brakes
3 Kw internal charger
DCFC

No mention of price. Compared to the Ego it seems this is a bit detuned, probably to help extend the range. Now if Energica will just get a dealer on the east coast.

I heard that prices start at 25K Euro

The production model of the EVA has just been shown at the EICMA show.  Looks nice and the specs are great, but what will the showroom price be?:

Price is €25.000 (Euro) before tax

A bit out of my financial comfort range.  You could buy a nice auto in the U.S. for that price.

The Ego only cost $34,000 U.S. and the Eva is a cheaper bike right?  I'd guess 24k-28k U.S.

25,000 EURO is $26,700 USD. It is definitely pricy but there are also a lot of features here that you are not getting on a Zero SR. The Eva is really the first electric motorcycle you can buy that you can have built in L2 charging and DCFC. I am really looking forward to reading some ride reports when this becomes available.

But DC fast charging is not included in the base price of 25K Euro...

Still, ~20% more performance than an SR for ~50% higher price isn't bad, considering the diminishing returns on the top of the pyramid. It's a high exotic price point, but not as high as Lightning or the Eco (or Mission was).

I wonder if it's 20% better performance. They have not given the bike's weight, at least I can't find it anywhere. If it's anything like the Ego it's a 560+ pound porker which is 35% more than an SR. If the Eva is anywhere near that heavy I can't see it being any quicker than a Zero.

Depends on how the range measurements are made (price is easy to convert Euros to Dollars)  but SR's range is measured by the US EPA standards and the EVA by European.  EU (mostly) is measured by a fixed 31 mph whereas the US EPA standard is based on actual start and stop driving.

A straight exchange rate comparison misses a bit. For one, freight is more expensive to the US; but the US price also does not include VAT.

As a point of comparison:

In Italy, the Ducati Panigale 1299 S costs € 25.990.

http://www.ducati.it/moto/superbike/1299_panigale_s/index.do (http://www.ducati.it/moto/superbike/1299_panigale_s/index.do)

In the US, it costs $ 25,495.

I expect the Eva to sticker just under $25k. Once you've paid taxes and dealer PDI and all that other good stuff, it'll be a fair bit more.

For range, you can expect to get similar miles/kWh as a Zero, so you can probably do the conversion since you know the battery size.

And if you buy it in California, don't forget to add 9% sales tax and a few hundred dollars for the DMV licensing fees.   :(

Energica appears to use the same capacity battery pack on both Ego and Eva, 11.7 kWh nominal.

This is slightly larger (+2.6%) than the 11.4 kWh nominal of the 2016 Zero ZF13 bikes.

Energica Ego (http://www.energicasuperbike.com/energica-ego-electric-superbike/) has 150 km (93 miles) at 80 km/h (50 mph), 100 km (62 miles) at 100 km/h (62 mph).

Zero S ZF13 (http://www.zeromotorcycles.com/it/zero-s-specs) has 158 km (98 miles) at 89 km/h (55 mph), 130 km (81 miles) at 113 km/h (70 mph).

A bit of interpolation using Wh/mile gives the following ranges:
- 89 km/h: 122 km Energica, 158 km Zero (+30%)
- 100 km/h: 100 km Energica, 144 km Zero (+44%)

Or in imperial units:
- 55 mph: 76 miles Energica, 98 miles Zero
- 62 mph: 62 miles Energica, 89 miles Zero

Nice!  Thanks for the analysis!

It's a bit surprising how much of a difference there is.  I look forward to seeing some more real world data.

During WAVE Trophy 2015 http://www.wavetrophy.com/en/ (http://www.wavetrophy.com/en/) I had the opportunity to drive together with a Energica Ego rider for a while. It was in the alps in Switzerland at Stilfser Joch Pass we both went up and down, the Ego in front of my Zero S 2013 11,4. At the straight parts of the road we reached 120 km/h I had to drive with full open throttle to follow the EGO and had temprature warning blinking all time while driving up, but no power cut. EGO was in eco mode, not in sport mode. Turns are very tight there so we had to brake hard before and take them slow. Downhills I was able to coast at 0% Regen closing throttle or at 100% tipping slightly the brake lever. Over all I had a range of 180 km in the Alps, while EGO had about 130 km travelling at the same pace. I talked to the driver of the EGO who is the dealer of it in Switzerland and he confirmed that you can set 4 torque and 4 regen modes, but it was not possible to set regen to 0% when throttle is closed. The gear box of the EGO was quite noisy by the way.

Interesting. Thanks for the update .. 180 km range on a 2013 Zero S with gear and some high-speed travel is pretty impressive. What was the average speed for the majority of the trip?

The Ego Catalog (http://www.energicasuperbike.com/PDF/web-catalogo-ego.pdf) lists the following regen modes. It's possible that it is outdated and the dealer has more accurate information.

Hmm. Ouch.

VAT in Italy seems to be about 20-22%.

That would put the US price of the EVA, assuming proportional to Ducati US/Italy pricing, at around $30k (before taxes, etc).

The Ego is also priced (http://www.energicasuperbike.com/buy-energica/) at "25.000€ / 34.000$ + taxes". I would have expected the Eva to be priced a little bit lower, as the motor tune is somewhat less (and typically streetfighters have a little less equipment, performance and price than their sportbike cousins).

Average speed was quite slow, about 55-60 km/h, due to the narrow turns at Stilfser Joch Pass. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stelvio_Pass (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stelvio_Pass)

I've talked to the driver of the EGO in June 2015; At that time there was no off option at regen settings. As it is a software setting I recommended that he shall suggest it to Energica when he has his later visit at Energicas headquarter in Milan. Maybe they have already done that.

FYI, Energica has stated that the Eva is priced at $34,000 USD.  I believe it costs the same as the Ego but has reduced power and different styling.

Hm.

That's a little surprising - street fighters based on sport bikes tend to have a little less equipment, a little less power (and a less peaky torque curve), and are typically priced 10-20% lower than their sport bike cousins.

Ego:
195 Nm FROM 0 TO 4700 rpm100 kW (ABOUT 136hp) FROM 4900 rpm TO 10500 rpm

Eva:

TORQUE 170 Nm
POWER 70 Kw (about 95 HP)

I'd love to see some more information on the differences in the two powertrains - ie is the motor almost the same, just a smaller controller as with the Zero S vs SR? If the torque is flat then the motor peak should start at around 4000 RPM. I wonder if the Eva has slightly lower ratio reduction gearing - top speed of 200 km/h instead of 240 km/h.

Some more information has surfaced, all Ego and Eva bikes will come prepared for the DC fast charging option.
This will allow the owner to easily add the feature later on.
Not sure if it applies to 2016 bikes only or if it is standard from now on.

Motor 70 Kw

so is that continuous and there is a higher peak power?   or is that limited by something other than the motor, like the battery or controller?

For that pricepoint, I want something that will have literbike power.

But the torque is there. So I would do a test ride and decide afterwards if it powerful enough.

I'm shocked that it's the same price as the Ego.  Why would you get a nutured Sport bike for the same money?  I get the more upright seating and a bit lighter and thinner with no fairings but less horse power and less torque for the same money?  How about $34 for the Ego and $28 for Eva.

I had the same thoughts.  I can only surmise that the price will change for either the Ego or the Eva when they both hit the showroom floor.  Otherwise the Eva is not going to sell.  You would have customers buying the Ego and putting bar-backs on it to obtain the riding position of the Eva.  ???

Does this have a transmission?  because if not, then no. The torque it does have may be instantly there... but the torque of a 1000cc engine through first gear is much greater... and first gear winds out to 90mph or higher.

A literbike will wheelie in 1st.
A literbike will wheelie in 2nd.
A literbike will wheelie in 3rd with a little clutch...

for the first two gears, the limiting factor of acceleration is not power. not traction. only the Center of Gravity.
1st winds out past 90mph... 2nd into 110ish range and 3rd beyond that for all the literbikes.

What I want to know is, if I open the throttle at 110 or below, will the front wheel come up?

THAT... is power.
until then, its a commuter.

No tranny on the Eva.  Probably will wheelie at those speeds.

This short article says the Energica is now taking "preorders" for the Eva and adding fast-charging to the model:
