Post by: Martin on September 30, 2015, 11:13:37 PM
Anyone have any input on how I can utilize this plug to charge my 2014 SR?

Get a transformer so you can convert down to 240v. The chargers don't go to 480v

You can test each pole, maybe the are getting 480 using 2 or more poles and a neutral, if so you could use one 220 pole and the neutral or ground to get your 220-240 volt.

Industrial 480v is likely 3 phase 480/277v 4 wire with neutral. I would highly doubt there's a 220v in there anywhere.

Down converting is the easier part from me.

What I don't have experience in is what hardware to utilize with it or if it is worth it.

I currently use the on-board and a fast charger (110v).

That's not on any NEMA chart I can find!

It's an aviation outlet. I would convert it to whatever the device that would charge the bike would need.

Any markings on the outlet to know what brand it is?

It's a Hubbell Plug, we use them all over the airport for our power carts and hydraulic mules.

My question really is: with this plug I have the availability to very high amperage. How can I use this to my advantage? What hardware would I have to consider purchasing? Is it worth it, or is my on-board and quick charge equivalent?

Buy some high-power chargers (Elcon or put together some Meanwells), a Y-splitter, and a frontend cable that splits up a J1772 input into the chargers, and connect that J1772 to this outlet via transformer and plugs. It's not simple, but that's probably the minimum complexity right now to take full advantage of it.
