Title: CHAdeMO
Post by: Doug S on May 06, 2015, 07:36:38 AM
Has anybody downloaded the full CHAdeMO spec from http://www.webstore.jsa.or.jp/webstore/Com/FlowControl.jsp?lang=en&bunsyoId=TS+D+0007%3A2012&dantaiCd=JIS&status=1&pageNo=0 (http://www.webstore.jsa.or.jp/webstore/Com/FlowControl.jsp?lang=en&bunsyoId=TS+D+0007%3A2012&dantaiCd=JIS&status=1&pageNo=0) or any other website?

Since it's becoming very clear that Zero isn't going to support those of us that might want to (or even THINK they might want to) use the CHAdeMO charging stations, it seems like somebody needs to get off the dime and come up with a home-brew version. Since I am an EE, I thought I'd at least take a quick look to see what's involved. What I've managed to gather so far leads me to believe it wouldn't be too difficult, but there is a fair amount of information not available anywhere except the spec.

Before I commit to buying the full spec (yes, I know, it's only $140), I'd like to at least have some idea that it's worth buying. If it has all the necessary information, I'll probably buy it. But if you have to become a "member" or a "collaborator" or something to get ALL the information, or if you need to purchase ten more standard documents to figure out what they're talking about, I'm not going to do that. And I'm not thrilled about spending my hard-earned cash to find out it's not comprehensive.

So has anybody purchased it? Can you tell me if it looks complete and comprehensive?

I am currently investigating if it's possible to make an aftermarketkit that charges through the external port. I do this together with an EV conversion specialist with knowledge of Chademo

Doug S.   Why don't you give Harlan a call at Hollywood Electrics about this? I talked to him this past week about CHAdeMO and Zero. He said it is on his list but not at the top of the list.

Not now, because he's in the USA and I am in Holland. Nothing wrong with people from the USA, but it's a bit to far in distance ;)
The location of the Dutch guy is ridable from here. But it's interesting to contact Harlan when I know some more.

Hi Lecram, I am also interested in Chademo and in Holland (Amsterdam area). But I ride an Empulse. Do you think your contact would be willing to port his conversion to that bike too?
Thanks.

It depends on the bike and how accessible the DC contacts are. I think that's good to focus on one bike first and keep in mind that there is also some interest from Brammo owners.

The EVTV Motor Verks guys are pushing the edge of what you want to do because they also want it, for their conversion cars.
https://github.com/collin80/JLD505 is their current attempt at an open-source car-side chademo controller. It's not quite finished yet.
There's also some hardware floating around ( https://code.google.com/p/canduino/ ) that makes this sort of hacking easier by sniffing chademo canbus sessions of existing vehicles (leaf, etc).

Good news, I emailed Fastned and according to them the chargers should be compatible, there's just nobody with a Zero who tested charging at on of their stations yet.

Sorry for the thread necro, but I figured I'd leave this extremely relevant link here for future searchers:

I emailed Tony Williams at Quick Charge Power for an update on a CHAdeMO system for the Zero. He expects to start work on it later this year and should be completed next spring.

I dont have any CHAdeMO stations near me  (southeastern USA)... however the only thing stopping my chargers from running on it is the protocol and connector.
If you could tell the station to supply 340v DC at around 38amps, it would max out my 13kw charger.

If I am remembering correctly, part of the protocol is a quick 500v isolation test before starting, so I would add a little filtering for that, but I use 600v FETs.. so off the top of my head I cant think of a reason why it wouldnt work off DC. I may have to de-rate the bridge rectifiers some if theres a thermal issue, since DC would only use half the bridge, the heat might not spread out as fast... when you're pushing that much amperage through silicon, getting the heat out is always the limiting factor.

all that said, as long as you dont try to overdrive it too far, you should be able to run any SMPS type charger on CHAdeMO.

I wouldnt try "normal" CHAdeMO charging of directly into the battery.... only because zeros are 116v bikes, and most CHAdeMO stations will not dip that low, even though the spec says they should. Most are expecting cars in the 400v area, and wont dip low enough.  That is the reason Zero dropped their CHAdeMO support in the first place.

Is that typically North-American? I travel all over Europe for my work and check every Chademo I see and they are all 50-500V.

Ultra just curious is that solution via the aux port or the controller? At the moment I'm limiting my setup to 75A because I use the aux port.

I think so. I dont have a list of "these worked for zero voltages, and these did not"... but I suspect the ones that did not work were by companies that have moved on to the SAE DC spec... (that spec has a 200v min voltage too)

I have seen claims that 80% of CHAdeMO chargers on the west coast are no compliant.  However, the Chargers on the East coast are made by companies that tend to be compliant.  It would be nice to have the opportunity to test them to find out.

Erasmo,

I am not sure how CHAdeMO connects on the Zero but I am confident it doesn't go through the auxiliary port due to power limitations there. I have an email that Zero sent my dealer when I had a CHAdeMO system on order. Benswing is correct, there are several CHAdeMO systems that did work well with the Zero system and they are far more common on the east coast than the west coast.

Well FINALLY the East Coast has some positive EV thing that the other coast doesnt have... :p

So are you saying that you are using ChaDeMo @75A? How does that work? I'm also living in the netherlands and want to use the Fastnet infrastructure for my highway trips. Please share your setup and connection method!

Not at this moment, the prototype is still having some problems talking to the Zero. Best way forward from here would be to ditch charging via the Aux port and charge via the controller, that way you can charge even faster at 1C.

I'm actually in the process of putting the ChaDeMo top case up for sale because I ordered a Super Charger. If you're interested in (letting someone) convert it for controller charging we could strike up a deal?

Hi guys!

Some weeks ago I came to the conclusion, that a Chademo interface to my ZERO is a challenging but feasible project. The results should be useful for any DIY conversion as well. I live in germany and found some traces of conversion projects including chademo. But unfortunately no realy useful project description.
Now I found this thread. Was there anything finished of the started projects or ideas? Does somebody know a finished conversion car with Chademo or a retrofitting of Chademo to an existing EV?

About the status in my project: Today I first time connected a CAN interface to a Chademo charger. In listen only mode. The loader sent some data. Surprisingly not on CAN-ID 108h and 109h, as it should according to the specification, but on 181h, 182h and 183h.
What is this about? Something I can just ignore? Does the EV needs to talk first on CAN before the loader sends its data on ID 108h and 109h?

Best regards, Jochen

I know an old electric T2 that has Chademo.
I had a project that was close to done but sold it and went for SC's instead. It is do-able though, I know a car conversion shop in Amsterdam that can get you all the parts if your interested.

Hi Erasmo,

you mean that T2 from Holland (http://rebbl.com/breaking-first-time-fast-charging-a-diy-ev-conversion-car/)?

Another dutch shop is http://www.newelectric.nl/ (http://www.newelectric.nl/). I have heared they might offer what I need. I have not contacted them yet. I will do so if I run into problems which I can not resolve on my own.

How far was your progress with your Chademo project? Did you managed the CAN-BUS communication?

Best regards, Jochen

No from the Netherlands, not Holland.

I got my set from NewElectric, I had mine built in a top case but I'm sure they can ship you the parts if you wanted. Hardware wise it was a solid product, but there were some issues with pairing the bike to the station. With a Super Charger on the way I didn't really look in to it but someone that is more proficient in can bus should be able to figure it out I guess.
