Title: AC Fast Charger Project for Zero S 2013
Post by: morimaxx on November 26, 2014, 07:10:09 PM
As ChaDeMo chargers are still rare here in Germany while 3phase AC Stations with 11 or 22 kW
capability are quite common I'm looking into some portable chargers for my Zero. Up to now
I'm using two QuiQ Chargers in side cases additional to the internal charger, charging power
is 3,1 kW; I'd like to use a 10 to 11 kW Charger for a 1C charge, like it is used with the
ChaDeMo option

Does anyone know how to connect to the Battery? The AUX Port is limited by a 30 Amp fuse,
a 100Amp Fuse like on the SR seems not installed on my Zero.

As space and wheight is naturally limited on any motorcycle the charger have to be compact
and lightweigt;
As we have to use a symmetrical load on the 3phase grid here I found 2 possible configurations:
- 6 Meanwell rsp-2000-48, 3 in parallel and that 2 times in series. Current limited to 75% on each MW -> 11 kW
- 3 Electway CHR-3 P in parallel, some chargers from China -> 9 kW:

Does anyone have another idea for a 11kW 3phase onboard charger?
High efficency and waterproof would be great.

We don't have to use the 3Phase symmetrical!
A BMW i3 will pull 25A at one phase at the charging station :-[ But it was designed for US
Also your home has a 3Phase system and it is not symmetrical loaded.

I would connect the charger at the Sevcon Battery connections. I do the same with my 2012 but have to switch on the system/Sevcon - you have the advantage that since 2013 Zero is doing this. The charging procedure switch on the Sevcon and open the 420A path. You will recognize if you move your bike when charging the encoder adjustment/motor will make its "sound".
It is important to activate the charging-precedure (onboard charger or using the quick charger signal to start this) before you start your one system.

How about installing CHAdeMON and then have an adapter to charge 11/22 kW AC that is getting more common in Europe?

"and then have an adapter"

11kw

Of course, if lugging that beast around, why bother with CHAdeMO*N* (Or FRANKENPLUG for that matter)?  Just use the Anderson connector directly.
