Zero sells an expensive carbon fiber rear cowl.

I like your pieces though :)

thanks for the replys 8)
problem is the labor cost for these parts, think that is also the problem with the rear cowl from zero...
extra is the not that cheap material cost...
-
Wow! That looks great!
How much time would you say you invested?
Have you made carbon fiber parts before?
-
yes, made several carbon parts before
my job includes also a lot of work on cars, motorbikes, ...
for the moment, the parts are laminated on the Original, a mould isn't interesting at this time
planning to make a 2nd pair, will count how many hours i worked on it...
-
I'm also interested to hear how long this takes - it looks really nice!
-
will keep you updated 8)
also thinking about making other parts like fenders, ...
-
one better pic of the carbon headlight cover
http://www.ekr8.be/zonneproducten/elektrisch-op-de-weg/ (http://www.ekr8.be/zonneproducten/elektrisch-op-de-weg/)
need to work on new versions!! i ordered a 'gas'tank to cover with carbon also...

Make something to replace the silly storage compartment! I would pay $$$ for a black or carbon fiber locking lid.

2x$$$.
There is enough unused room in there to store my rain suit, lock, and lunch then ride without backpack.
-
so you would like to get rid of the storage compartment?...

have a 'tank' here, havn't looked at it yet, don't think it will be a major problem to get rid of it...
-
No, make it into a real storage compartment like a Honda NC700.
Dubster, if I made a lid out of stainless steel sheet metal, could you use it as a form to produce CF ones?
-
it is possible to make a template to make carbon parts.
the problem with carbon is time... if i have to make a mold for just 1 item, it costs hours of work! i can also laminate on the original...
ok, technicaly, it isn't a ultra-light piece but just for the looks it is perfect...
-
Dubster you just make a mold just like you would with fiberglass.
Start wit ha plug, aka the part in this case, make a mold around it and you can make a lot more parts from it later.

Dubs, your work is professional. Keep it up! I am going to start a new thread / rant about Zero giving us a real storage solution. I don't want to hijack your thread. I wanna see the CF tank when you are done :)

burton, i know the procedure 8) comes to the same conclusion as writen above, making a good mold takes time and money. for 1 piece not interesting
i'm not doing it for the money but as i see more 'emotorcycleforum-members' are interested, can make a mold of some pieces
keep you updated!!

Dubster, those parts are stunning! No comparison to the cheesy molded plastic.
May I ask, did you use a prepreg or did you lay them up by hand? If you laid them up by hand, did you use epoxy, polyester or what? Do you have to vacuum bag or can it just air-cure? I've got a fair amount of experience laying up fiberglass, and I seriously hate the rinky-dink plastic look of my SR. If I thought I could do as good a job as you've done I'd be ALL OVER it.

thanks!! the carbon is layed up by hand and than covered with epoxy. after that (and also because i had to do some other parts) I wet-sanded it and sprayed a 2C varnish on it but that isn't necessary.
i have the possibility to vacuum bag parts, I have some other zero parts to do ('gas'tank,...)and it might be possible that i will do them with vacuum to save time!
basicly, carbon + epoxy is the same procedure as polyester ...
if you have questions, don't hesitate!!
