Title: Misc comments
Post by: Larry295 on June 30, 2012, 03:57:00 AM
-Has anybody noticed the fact that you have no regen braking at all, as soon as you start the bike. If you start, and immediately roll downhill, no regen. The regen becomes activated if and only if you use a tiny bit of throttle first.

-Has anybody noticed the grrr grrr grrrr sound that mostly happen, again, when you start? Turn the ignition on, do not touch anything on the bike, and you hear these grrr grrr grrr sounds... I wonder what those are for...?

Regen braking is probably disabled until you've depleted the battery a bit. If you've fully charged from the wall, you can't put more charge in via regen.

Yep, I get those sounds too. Curious where they come from.

well no. Even with battery half, if you don't open a tiny bit, no regen.

I live at the top of a hill and when I roll down the hill to the stop sign at the bottom, I get an on-and-off drag that appears to be the regen cycling on and off. After riding for a while, the regen comes on all the time as you would expect it to.  Of course, it is possible that I unconsciously touch the throttle slightly when rolling downhill. I will have to give it a try sometime while making sure that I don't open the throttle.

I do get the grrr, grrr noise. I think I heard somewhere that is the sound of the controller trying to get input from the motor position sensors.

gotcha! well your feed back is interesting anyway.
I am also on top of an incline. So I roll back from the garage, turn the key and roll down. So it's easy for me to start with no throttle at all.
So I'll keep testing different methods, and keep you posted on what happens ;)

No, because it's so flat where I live I can't achieve forward motion without throttle application (or Flintstone drive :))

Yes, though usually only when I am pushing the bike forward or backward. Once or twice the planets Hall-effect sensors have aligned and then it was pretty constant even when the bike was stationary. The controller is putting a little power to the motor, but it's very little.

Larry295,

The regen system that we have in our bikes prevents the batteries from being over-charged (one of the ways of killing -and I mean that- a Lithium batttery is overcharging it). The BMS takes control and "manages" the high currents the motor sends back to the battery pack.
The computer system needs to "know" the throttle potentiometer position/resistance, which is the reason why you do not have regen right away after you switch-on the bike. As soon as you move the throttle a little, and you have not got a full pack you should get the regen working.

The regen system is a nice topic to discuss as we have a "light" regen in our bikes for a few reasons, being one of them the gound-contacted tire section...
Look at your tires in the middle-section. Have you noticed they wear more than normal?  ;)

And yes, I also do get the grrr, grrr noise. I hate that  >:(

Thx Lipo.
I haven't noticed any wear on my rear tire. I only have 300 miles...Why is there a problem down the road?

I have about 3700 miles on the bike, the rear tire is definitely wearing pretty fast. I probably will change it out around 6000-7000 miles.

The "problem" -if we call it that way- is made up of a combination of factors:

- Soft tires (with lots of grip)
- The regen system
- Small tire section

I knew beforehand that this would happen -I was familiar with the tires- and the rest it comes with the ZF9 concept, which being positive is not bad as a bigger tire section would reduce range and increase maintenance cost...

Protomech: I would be surprised if you can "squeeze" the rear tire that much...7000 miles is a lot.

I do not complain -I actually like the fact that Zero installed a high-quality pair of Japanese tires in the ZF9

ha, I did some drifting today !

overtaking an ICE bike that was up shifting ..... 250CC or so bike and then going into a patch of freeway 80km/h speed limit though and me up to full 100++  as no traffic at all - 3 lanes, and then seeing a highway patrol car parked on the median strip - for sure the cops with speed cameras clocking both sites of traffic. I hit the brakes full on and get some rear wheel drifting -- good fun and as I pass the cops down to about 83km/h --
certainly got a flat spot on my rear now -

Speed cameras...they are awful  >:(
You ever come to Barcelona they are like a plague...you ever go to Switzerland -never ever- do any speeding...(The biggest speeding ticket ever $800K, yes, $800.000 for a Swedish driver caught close to 190 mph)...

I'm starting to make a research to improve the braking system on the Zero S...stay tuned  ;)

I gave that roll-down-the-hill-without-touching-the-throttle experiment a try today.  I had my bike in Eco mode and the regen was not activated until I came to a stop and then rolled on the throttle. After that it functioned normally.

Yep Richard. Correct. The regen needs even a tiny split second of throttle to be activated when you start the bike.
